Title: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: PPS on March 01, 2016, 11:08:52 PM
Well, not alot to say yet, but it will be a shift in how we did things with MMR ... first change is we are tightening up best we can so announcement is a short time before production - can we be certain of this, no, but we certainly know what things need to happen that did not to at least bring the distance between the announcement and orders to shipment WAY down.

I can say that parts pre-production parts have all been ordered and are being checked out as they come in. There is at least one fully running proto with almost all new production parts. The electronics are multiple revs in and the game is playing with sounds and lights and has been for some time.

There will be a different approach to how the versions of the game are structured, a bit different for MMR which will be obvious once you see the game.

More as we have more to say ...

The reveal of Game #2 is not going to happen at TPF, unfortunately. Slight delay due to engineering and parts ordering process. The goal is to keep distance and confidence between announcing and availability reasonably low - so we will put this off only for a short while until things are where they need to be.

Can't you give us just the first lettre of game 2 ?  :D

I think this is paramount. Yeah it's great to bring games to shows to show them off and get people excited, but if there isn't product ready to be delivered (soon), then the whole clusterF starts all over again.

Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: PPS on March 02, 2016, 06:15:09 PM
That's exactly why it's not at TPF, as we did not feel comfortable that we would not end up with this increase between showing and getting everyone riled up and delivering.

Rick, respectfully asking. But I thought this time there was going to be zero distance between ordering and shipping the games? As in "no more pre-orders taken on subsequent titles". I think from many of your past statements there was a clear assumption that the games would be built and then sold, in that order.

Clearly there is plenty of demand for whatever you are building, assuming it isn't Popeye.  :)
Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: PPS on March 02, 2016, 10:15:09 PM
Well, it's not smart (pinball) business to have product and then tell the market about it, especially when there are millions of $ in cost of goods.

What is better is to give enough time for customers to place orders with resellers, and then the resellers will indicate their demand.

Without a decent measure of the demand it's a little difficult to invest in X quantity of games - we expect there to be demand, but you don't stall everything waiting for resellers to collect money, etc.

Chicago Gaming is not going a warehousing (which costs money), and neither Stern nor CGC really wants to hold games.

So, if people are uncomfortable with paying ahead for a game, then they should wait until some reseller has them at their place and they can pick it up (and pay sales tax usually). They do it all the time with Sterns, so not sure the model would be any different here.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. But isn't knowing demand and storing games until they are sold kind of the definition of a distributor? Respectfully, I am only parroting what you promised about this time last year. Going forward there would be no more pre-orders on games.

In any case I'm looking forward to other titles you are doing. Maybe the rumors will be false and you are tooling up to build me a Funhouse right now.  ;D
Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: PPS on March 03, 2016, 11:02:49 AM
This is not a pre-order, it's an order. We do not need pre-orders to figure out how many we are building as parts have already been ordered for a first batch.

It is typical to get the channel started before building product - this is not the same, no business would run building parts, putting them in a warehouse and then telling people to order them from stock - that is never been done with any pinball machine I've ever seen, including stern.

Again, if people are uncomfortable, then they have do not have to buy, no problem, no one is making them. I think the only advise I would have is to choose carefully who they buy from, as we have all seen people/businesses who were reputable then become unstable for various personal or business reasons and then strange things happen.

I posted this somewhere else, but I'm going to make the same point here:

The colorizing should be part of the r&d budget for each game, and be rolled out included with each remake, ideally on release.

It would throw fuel on the sales, and immediately make the remakes more coveted than originals.

The argument about whether a remake should include improved things not original is already moot, because the machines are shipping with leds instead of incandescent, new boards, etc.

Also solves the piracy issues, since every remake owner then is entitled to the color dots and keeps life simple for everyone.

The current plan is that full color will be integrated into at least one of the models of the game from the start.

Hi Rick,
Happy Easter to you and your family and all at PPS.
Easter reminds me of my loving Granny.  She always said, "Patience is a virtue young man".  I think that holds true in these days, especially when it comes to Game #2.
If you allow it, anticipation can be relished as much as the actuality of reality.
All the best, Mike V

I'd honestly rather pre-order. if you think about it your going to be waiting about the same amount of time regardless (from now till you get your order). the difference is you kick back and wait knowing you have a secure spot and you find out what the title is to game #2 faster :D

I was lucky though, I only waited 7 months. Honestly wouldn't of bothered me to wait longer, but I'm happy it came when it did. anybody who has done any kind of project, which should be everyone. Should realize things usually take longer then expected almost everytime. The more variables involved the higher the chance. the funny thing is people understand this ( I think anyway). one of the biggest things about most people is if they can complain they will, to anyone listening.
Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: PPS on April 05, 2016, 06:32:57 PM
People that are comfortable will pre-order, people that are not don't have too. As always in life we learn and we change what happens. This time we will have a better estimate of a real timeframe for release, and the distance between the pre-order and the order will be shorter, which is why PPS initiated the delay to announcing it past TPF - we would have loved to have shown it there (and we could have as it's been running fine for months), but we did not feel that we had a decent view of when it would actually be ready on the line to produce. We are monitoring with CGC to see where things are and will announce at the best time. That does not mean that the real production may not move out (or shockingly in), but it means we will have a better idea than what happened with MMR.

Game #2 Attack from Mars??? Game #3 Monster Bash? ??? ? TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!!!

At what $$ level for an AFMR? Will you pay $8,500.00 for it?

I'm out on the AFMR at $8,500.00. Others will still be in at that price.
100% a great pin, fun to play.
My two cents is they will need to come down on price for the AFMR if they want to sell a 1,000 units or more.

I think they would have a better chance with the MBR at the $8,500.00 price level than AFMR.
I'm in on a MBR if the price is not too crazy.

BTW still can't wait to get my MMR pin.

100% agree with Quadrat

AFM was much cheaper than MM on the used market, so the price of a remake should reflect this difference, or the demand won't be as good as the MMR.
MB is a different animal, and I won't be shocked if MBR will be priced similar to the MMR.

There will be some changes to the model structure of game #2 and beyond ... more differentiation between the models (likely 2 models) than was the case with MMR ...

Lot's of cool toys, I would get one.

I thought I read that Monster Bash required licensing from each monster.  Maybe it was written in sarcasm and I was dreary eyed. Not sure, but that might be a MB deal delayer, maybe not.  Maybe Rick can clear up any licensing that is required for a MB type theme(Warner Brothers?), and the time to process the paperwork/negotiations and have to deal with that part of pinball biz. You give up your hobby when you make it your biz?

As far as the price goes, keep it as low as you can, but still make enough profit to keep rolling out the remakes, cover your family health care, bills, etc, family vacation, new used car, AC fix, kids braces, etc....  Best of Luck!!

It will be at the venue that is chosen based on game being at a point where PPS feel comfortable announcing it.

That venue will depend on when we agree that the game is at that point.

I hope game #2 is AFM.  With MMr and AFMr you would have 2 of the top 3 rated games according to many.  Looking forward to seeing what the plans are.
Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: swagger on April 25, 2016, 03:39:07 PM
My guess is Monster Bash being most likely for #2. Why? Because you can buy AFM in decent condition for 6.5 - 7k today. This is less than what a remake will go for, so demand will not be so hot.

MB on the other hand is selling for a few thousand over what MBR would go for, so demand will be there.

CC is probably not going to be a big seller if they ever go down that road unless they finish the game code. As it stands today its only expensive as its very rare, and the last "standard" game Williams made.
Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: Lloyd Olson on April 25, 2016, 04:58:30 PM
Only thing missing on CC is one thing on the rule card that was decided to be left out. Rest is done. Pinball News has the recording of the fireside chat with the designers where this is explained.

AFMR will sell. Mint or restored AFM's go for more than 7K. And decent ones are still 21 years old.

ToTAN would be a great choice as Table #3.  Since The Pinball Arcade uses it as their free game a lot of people are already familiar with it.  It also looks and sounds beautiful and is a ton of fun!

Regardless of when CC is, the code would be 'completed' (we have a runtime compile environment of the CC code - i.e. we have the complete source code). Additionally, there is some features that were left off the game (like the saloon doors - we have the tooling for those as well).

Not saying where CC is in the queue of games, but just fyi regarding CC.

I read somewhere they are only doing WPC-95 games right now, due to the emulation framework they are currently running only supporting wpc-95. If thats true it rules out WW.

They could improve their emulation setup down the road to cover wpc89 games, but my guess is they will make all the high demand wpc-95 games before tackling that.

regardless of whatever it is  you can sign me up. I have the medieval madness on route right now and it's doing great numbers anywhere from 150 to 200 a week. I even have a WOZ and it's usually does about 3/4 of that. think one of the main differences between a lot of the games from the 90's and now is there was a clear objective, you really only had to play the game a few times to get the gist of it. So the majority of the players aren't confused as to what's going on half the time.

WOZ seems to appeal more towards people who are more experienced. one of the biggest complaints I get from new players is they feel cheated because their game is over in usually less then a minute. I was able to somewhat remedy that by turning on the ball save timer and increasing the chance of a match to 20%. still doesn't make it easier to understand.

but owning the MMR has definitely turned me on to investing in the next few to come.

There will be no options.

Inserts will not be a point of contention as I think most every other game had white behind the black ink originally.

The majority of AFM's inserts are black ink only.  All shot rows (except Jackpots), all locks, return to battle, 3 of the 4 SOL inserts, MARTIAN inserts..

Please do not rely on multiple ink layers to solve this problem, especially if you're going to do AFM at some point.  Replacement playfields with opaque ink have been manufactured recently, so it should be possible for CGC to do the same.

Its simple to figure out...what game has had the most new parts made in the last 6 months. What game is going down in value on the secondary market.  What game is the easiest to remake and guarantee sales north of 1k machines.

AFMr IMO will be next.

That would be nice if they could remake Big bang, I also played KingPin from capcom on visual pinball that seems like it would of been a great game, to bad. Lot of great titles, I stopped buying new and started getting old bally/Williams machines. Got titles I was sure probably weren't on the remake list, Champion Pub and RFM. Saw a NIB champion pub on ebay for 8,400. Just curious would that mean Adams family might make it on the list or is that midway. I get very confused with these companies. bally/midway, Williams, bally....

Lets take a guess..

AFM  - next with out LE options which is a bummer for me because I like the options on my MMr LE.

CC - which is a bummer for me, I find it too easy.
They will keep pumping out machines with the basic system which is great.
Big question is will BBB be remade... again.
That would me more overhead for R&D.

I recently picked up a used HUO MMRLE and I am enjoying it immensely!!! I had a GBLE on order from Stern but cancelled after 4 months when I started to see all those awful PF clear coat issues starting to emerge. I wasn't going to take an $8,000 chance on that so I got my money out and went in search of an MMRLE.

I'm extremely happy with the quality and the new engineering choices, it's a fantastic game. I'm ready to hear what you guys have up your sleeve next and would be excited by MBR AFMR or CCR.

Game #2 is in UL test now ... most of the parts are either in or ordered, and I should be getting a game to do final test on in the next 2-3 weeks ... as to where and when the game would be announced ... barring any issues I would expect it to be announce sometime around Expo and for sure there will be a couple for people to see/play ..

soon ...

Hi Rick,

How soon is soon ? From 2/8 till now (19/9)  it's more than 1,5 month - that's not soon in my opinion?  :-\

Would it be this month, next month, or much later ?

BTW : I'm very happy with my MMRLE that I have since one month.  :)

Greetings from Belgium (Europe)

I had been asked to but need to be in many different places during the time I'm there, so I think CGC may be doing one as that is what I recommended, but not sure if they put something together or not.

We are much more interested in announcing a game with a tight shipping timeframe ... most of the games that are being annouced are a bit off in the distance, we hopefully would be one of the first shipping.

That will likely be revised ... game is in finishing touches - we don't want a game to show, we all want a game that people can purchase. I think expo will be full of games to show ... all parties involved want to reveal a game that is fully complete and will available for people to order and buy doing the best to not have an MMR experience with delays to produce ... that is far more important than trying to time for a show, as we can always to launch events as well as there are shows about every month these days ...

Don't worry we can wait for AFMr a little longer. It helps me as I am still on the fence about buying another.

It's so much better waiting to announce it until people can actually buy it and have it delivered within a fair time frame this time. Well done to Rick and both Dougs for doing it this way from now on.

We are finalizing things, and I will post on the PPS forum information as soon as we have anything to post, but it will be soon.

I can tell you that most parts are in or have been ordered, and assemblies are being constructed now, electronics have been done for months. There are just some minor cosmetic details being finalized, etc.

We have had something to do with the delay in announcing as we want the distance between ordering and delivery to be 'reasonable'.

so just so I'm clear the place I need to keep looking back on this page for the announcement? (not pinside or tilt etc.)

also how long after the announcement are you planning on taking orders? (can I call planetary to place an order directly after I see the announcement?)

thank you
Title: Re: Welcome to Game #2 board on the PPS forum
Post by: PPS on December 01, 2016, 08:46:11 PM
SO, the FIRST place I'm going to announce it here, and I'm sure whether I or CGC announce it on Pinside it would be there within a minute or two anyways.

We would likely be taking 'pre-orders' as the game will be shipping reasonably soon after the announcement. The game will be built at Chicago Gaming which has the benefit of not having alot of issues in terms of finding parts and scheduling the line (which the Stern execs have been great, but the combination of two companies trying to manage parts shortages and issues has been a challenge) - so the upside should be a more consistent 'up-time' to producing games. The downside is that CGC's line will inherently be running slower per day ... but given the starts and stops on the MMR line thru the past year, it could actually be a positive, we will see.

The game is going thru final tinkering, and it went into UL testing awhile ago, but with so many things going on here, I've not checked on the status - it's alot easier this time, as CGC knows the 'pinball' UL process, as well as there are many components that are the same or similar, etc. I should be getting a pre-production game here in Reno shortly, as well as I know they are looking to put a couple out on test.

Stay tuned.

Hello Rick,
Thanks for the update and excellent information, I am very much looking forward to your new game.  The MMr you guys made is wonderful.
Have to ask, and I apologize for the frustration it may cause....Do we have an official name of the new game yet and pricing structures?
I look forward to hearing from you and certainly understand your need for careful release to avoid the usual backlash.
Jim

not yet ... we certainly have a name, but have not published that, as it's not useful without the answers to other key questions (pricing, etc) ...

it is FAR less painful to keep pushing the announcement that it would be to take pre-orders and deal with that we had for MMR ...

You will hear it from me first, PPS is the largest reseller of MMR's and we expect to be the same for the next games as well.

Since there is only 500 LE , and the concept Color is Green trim ..
What was it that limited it to this color and not any other option  such as the MMR LE..
Even though it was a Limited edition I was hoping for the Plain SS trim or Black as well ..
Yes the Green is one color that I am going to have to mull over just on its 1st impression [Of seeing it]..
It was immediate on the MMR once I seen it on the web [Gold Color] it was the color to get and was Happy on that choice when I received mine .
Green ...I am reading that others are to thinking of what I am thinking to .
No criticism here just 1 lonely opinion ...but I may not be alone.

I'd have to spend some time to get the numbers, but the large majority of what we sold were gold, then I believe stainless, and then black.

kept the originals just in case.

I played AFMr today and yesterday at TPF.  I had no plans to buy a game this weekend but after seeing it in person and playing it I was so impressed I ordered an LE.  It is stunningly beautiful.  The LED inserts are jewels.  The large color display and speakers just add to an all-time classic title.  Love the topper. Amazing job.

Also, I spoke with two of my friends at TPF and all 3 of us agree we are in if there is a MBr.

That is a question for Chicago Gaming as to what they can say about what they will build it what order - my assumption is that they will build some SE/CE for dealers and shows and then move to prioritize LE's/

That is a question for Chicago Gaming as to what they can say about what they will build it what order - my assumption is that they will build some SE/CE for dealers and shows and then move to prioritize LE's/

Tell them to take their time... Work out the kinks with SE/CE and get the LEs perfect.   ;D

SE ordered, very excited.  Can't wait for remake #3 (particularly Monster Bash....)
Very positive experience working with Rick.
